Fresh, spontaneous and innovative

To celebrate the Online Ceramics Gallery we have asked some of our potters to pick their favourite pot on the website and why they like it. We have also reduced the price of the pot by 20% for one week.

Last week John Pollex picked a Barry Stedman, this week Richard Godfrey picked John Higgins, this is what he had to say, ‘As a maker myself I am inspired by John Higgins work. His approach to clay defies the usual clichés and his work is always fresh, spontaneous and innovative. This beautiful dish exemplifies John’s ability to manipulate clay. His touch and feel for the material result in a strong dynamic form, full of movement and energy.

The piece is brought to life by a wonderfully painterly approach to the surface. The simple palette of white, red and copper black with bold brushstrokes and energetically incised lines unites the whole into a joyful celebration of making. At this point in my career I find myself trying to recapture that magical first contact with clay and the joy of making that went with it. For me this piece sums that up and it certainly lit up my day.’
