Kate Windibank

Born in Sussex, Kate Windibank was trained as a fine artist at Nottingham Trent University, and after two decades working in computer generated imagery, she needed to get back to her formative interest in materials, more specifically her developing love of clay, and studied ceramics at the City Lit, London, graduating in 2019. This materiality strongly characterises her work, which is freely-formed and organic in conception, and where the actions of making are manifest in the bold but also delicate nature of her pieces. Using both stoneware and porcelain, her sculpture can have a crisp, almost papery quality, evoking a geology that can be fragile too, one that is affected by the erosions and enrichments of time and weather.

Kate press-moulds, fragments and reassembles, so that her forms have a sense of reconstitution, making us think of the regenerative, gradually changing qualities in the landscape. She deals with a world in a kind of flux, where seemingly permanent elements transmogrify too, just as they do in the processes she employs. Kate currently lives and works in Hertfordshire.
