Barry Stedman is an unusually free and fluid glazer, his very painterly and intimate pots evoking the colours and textures of weather, sky and land in-the-round. A painter by inclination, he throws as he decorates, enjoying the “soft responsive clay” of his vessel forms, and developing this spontaneity in the gestural, intuitive nature of his colour and marking. Having been educated at Barnfield College, Luton (where he would himself teach for several years), Stedman was a ceramics graduate of Harrow (University of Westminster). He then spent a year as an assistant in Edmund de Waal’s studio, and though a comparative newcomer on the ceramics scene, Stedman is already establishing a reputation for his distinctive and poetic individual pots.
