Rachel Wood is an inventive thrower and handbuilder whose complexly layered work powerfully invokes the colours and strata of the landscape, the geology beneath our feet. She studied ceramics at Loughborough University, and has since spent much time involved in community education. After a period as studio assistant to the potter Robin Welch, she was artist-in-residence at Rufford Craft Centre, and more recently at Sturt Craft Centre, Australia. She now continues to teach, in addition to making work for exhibitions in the UK and overseas. Rachel draws her inspiration from terrains as diverse as temperate Derbyshire and sun-bleached Australia. She uses her various slips and glazes with the delicacy of watercolour, poetically conveying the visual complexity of what she sees and experiences.
