Walter Keeler

A potter of international reputation, Walter Keeler has done much to reinvent the language of British functional ceramics over the past thirty years, and has been hugely influential, both as maker and teacher. Born in London, and educated at Harrow School of Art, Keeler subsequently taught there (on the famous Harrow Course) and at Bristol, but now works full time in south Wales. Here he produces not only his famous salt glaze, but his more recently developed colourful creamwares and ink-wash glaze pieces. His thrown and manipulated forms, precisely executed and technically virtuoso, are full of character and life, as well as Keeler’s love and knowledge not only of British pottery history, but the related industrial forms to which he is drawn. No-one has done more to show how continually challenging tableware can be, or how persuasively it can be re-drawn and re-made.
