John Higgins brings a freshness and freedom to British ceramics, whether one is looking at his splendidly painterly platters or his thrown and altered hand-built vessels, which show his appreciation of contemporary architecture and other modern forms. Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Higgins was educated at Wolverhampton College of Art in the late 1960s and at Sussex University. He enjoys the potential complexity of the clay structure, cutting and altering to make interesting profiles and silhouettes and using surface for his energetic interactions of drawing and gestural glazing. His use of colour and line add to the layered depth of these pieces. A very experienced teacher too, John brings great passion to the art of clay through the expressive verve of these pieces.
