This oval, stemmed vessel was created in black earthenware by Richard Phethean using a combination of throwing, altering, and assembling techniques. The surface was decorated on the leather-hard clay with brushed slips and paper resist, producing bold graphic motifs. After bisque firing, selected areas were stained and treated with wax resist before the application of a clear glaze. Richard is shown holding the finished piece.
