Francis Lloyd-Jones

Yorkshire-based Francis Lloyd-Jones is one of our most interesting functional potters, a very good designer who has sought to re-interpret familiar table-forms in his own original way. He makes simple uncluttered pieces, often with satisfying saltglaze surfaces, and post-wheel alterations of shape and detail that further distinguishes his production. This is quietly re-thought modern work, almost Scandinavian in its freshness, restraint and clarity of making.

Francis has a noted family background in studio pottery, but initially studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art. He was soon drawn back to clay, and trained firstly on the Thomastown pottery course in Ireland, and then with Lisa Hammond in Greenwich. He was resident potter at the very successful Farmer’s Arms (Grizedale Arts) at Lowick Green In Cumbria, but now has a studio at Hovingham, near Kirkbymoorside. There his very elegant tableware output includes jugs, teapots and vases of various shape, as well as an accomplished range of lidded pots, large dishes and bowls. Eminently tactile and generous, there is an ease and fluency about this work, robust in conception, but with a fine sense of finish.
